KISS KiT - got to choose

Post by strangeways »

If KISS put out releases this way would you buy them?
Duran Duran has already issued a release this way.

If Kiss did this would you go for it?

The format name is an acronym for “Keep In Touch”. Album releases are in the form of a cartridge device, housed in a customized box with photo cards, booklets and stickers, that acts as a digital key to unlock music, videos and other content on the app.

For those who don't know about KiT albums, they're billed as essentially "CDs but for your phone". You get a little plastic cartridge looking thing that you connect to you phone's microphone to get access to the album through the KiT player app for 24 hours before you have to reconnect again. In the KiT player you can adjust the volume of vocals so if you want to you can listen to the album entirely instrumental (no more relying on "Official Instrumental" videos on Youtube). There's also a video function that encourages you to film yourself singing along and you get access to a digital photobook. They usually come nicely packaged like usual albums in a pretty box with photocards and a miniature photobook.

The Korean company manufactures the hybrid physical/digital KiT album format. Popularized by K-Pop, nine million KiT albums have been sold since 2017. Earache is the first label in Europe to adopt the format outside K-Pop, and the first label to offer the format on frontline titles and as a chart reporting format in April 2025 with the Official Charts Company

Tim Bailey, head of label at Earache, described KiT as a “format for our times”.

“It can be overwhelming with the world of digital music at your fingertips,” he said. “The endless choice available means I rarely immerse myself in albums the way I used to. I flit between albums. I’m impatient. My attention span is broken. I rarely give new records my full attention. And it means I don’t have that same intense connection to my new favorite music the way I once did. The KiT album invites us to go deeper.”

“I think KiT is already the most important physical format since the CD, and once music fans dive in and find the joy in it the way I have, I’ve no doubt it could be a major global player in the physical music world,” said Bailey. “Its unique combination of the tactility and scarcity of physical media and the portability and user-friendliness of the digital technology makes it the format for 2025 and beyond.”

Duran Duran has already issued a release in this new format (40.00)

Danse Macabre De Luxe is now available in an innovative, limited-edition version KiTalbum. Duran Duran have announced an exclusive collaboration with South Korean-based media and music technology company, KiTbetter, to create the Danse Macabre De Luxe KiTalbum - a new format that unites the physical and digital worlds within a special mobile-based KiTplayer (available for both Android and iOS) to create a full album experience.

The Danse Macabre De Luxe KiTalbum comes in an exclusive coffin-shaped, foiled box and includes an insert card, four exclusive photo cards in an envelope, a 22-page album booklet, a wearable button, and a customized black ball chain. The KiTalbum unlocks the experience on the KiTplayer, where, in addition to the full sixteen album tracks, the stunning music videos for both ‘Black Moonlight’ and ‘Danse Macabre,’ the lyric videos for ‘Psycho Killer’ and ‘Evil Woman,’ documentary footage about the making of the record, song lyrics, and exclusive photos are featured, together with a special VIP fan hub.

Hmmm, I think I'll give it a miss. It goes through the special app, so you can lose access to it, and I really don't need the hassle of this to listen to something.

I may even be part of the silent CD group! I haven't bought many CD's in the past years but when I did, like with Chinese Democracy, I bought it to have the CD but I never even put it in any CD player. I just downloaded the album to listen to. These days I would just stream it, but that was in 2008.

I've got record and tape players and CD players, so I'll stick with proper physical media where you do own the music as you hold something.

I guess it's a Korean thing maybe? We'll see how it goes in the western world.

I got Jesus in my fax machine. I saw Ho Chi Minh down @ Burger King. I dated Vinnie Vincent as a Drag Queen. I still don't understand a f**kin' thing.
I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass and I'm all out of bubble gum.
