Bondo King Tukoz is back with a new PS-10 project!!!

Post by tukoztukoz »

Plenty of time these days, so I’ve decided to work on my butchered PS-10. I want to get it back to its original shape...
The techniques I used for the Ultrash VVV are back! That’s good news, isn’t it?
Forgive me Paul, I’ve sinned, but that was a long time ago!

...to be continued.

Thanks Genebaby!
The more I do this, the faster I get. Maybe I should work on used Jacksons and make VVVs? I could make millions, there’s such a heavy demand for VVV’s
I did some more work today : I took some wood away to fix the elements (Close to 80 screws). Chambered PS-10. The pieces of wood come from an old baby’s bed.

When complete how much weight will this add to the guitar? Isn't your VVV pretty heavy?

That’s something to consider, you’re right. The VVV is 11 lbs (5kg.100). Good for fitness! The PS-10 will be better : 6.5lbs now, parts(strings, pu, screws, bridge and everything) are 2.2 lbs. So I have to be careful with the filler....
Mirrors are too heavy, and too hard to work on ( I’ve read Paul’s stories about it, and that made me forget about it)
I think I’ll do a contour on the back, and remove some material.
It needs a binding too, or yellow paint on the borders, otherwise it would look like a plain iceman.

Cool, I have a Silvertone Apocolypse that I got from Kamn Guitars in Oregon that had the top routed and then real glass mirror set on the top. The guitar is very heavy like your VVV. Not bad but something to think about. This what his Iceman looks like..............

Yes, heavy guitars don’t get played that much, that’s what I’ve heard from Derek Tucks on an interview as he talked about second hand guitars in mint condition...
Nice job on your Silvertone!
The PS 10 they sell today have plexy mirrors, so it’s not too heavy.
I don’t want to hurry with this, because sometimes new and better ideas come by...

I think it was 1993. Nobody wanted to buy that guitar from me, and I thought I was free to do what I wanted with it. That was stupid of course. Same thing happened with a Fender strat I still have. There was something fashionable in butchering guitars at that time...
Today I have a bunch of guitars, nice ones, but they don’t get a any modification. Except if the guitar is already broken...

So you'll end up with two in the end?

Maybe do the mirror finish on this one now? Using plexiglass?

Yes, two, but the second one (120) feels completely different : tuners, bindings, logos on the back of the headstock, fretboard inlays, neckjoint, neck thickness, knobs, jackplate, or even painting... everything is under. I haven’t tried the sound because I haven’t cleaned it yet. Viruses... It’s a nice guitar that looks close to the original, but its « spirit » is lost.
I wish the butchered one was the PS120 instead of the Ps10.
As I said I’ll keep it in its original state. No mods.
For the PS10 I won’t hurry. Plexi mirrors are still interesting. The thing is to find the material. Maybe an escape to Japan to find a set ? Tell me please if you know where I can get them
I think I’ll work on the shape first: contour, thickness, and reduce some weight

Cool man, I figure you may as well go all out if you can. I don't know about plexiglass but you can probably get some online, cheaper than the trip, ha ha.

Funny, I’ve just drawn the cracked mirror design from a picture last night. I’ve counted 154 pieces. I’ve got to find a technique to cut the pieces from mirrors I found at Ikea (swedish shop famous here in Europe). Nice mirrors, thin, cheap, good quality.
154 pieces... I understand why the Ibanez PS CM-10 is so expensive...
Now I wonder if there ´s a joint or something between the pieces. Anybody seen a CM10?

Started to cut a round 40 pieces today. I need the patience of a japanese Ibanez worker!
Notice the ground (stone) : same technique. But plastic is easier to cut...

Haha!
The Covid lockdown was great for doing all kinds of unthinkable things. Now I need time for all that. I stopped my PS10 project because I was worried about the guitar weight, as Kev said. I want to keep the plexi mirrors, and rebuild the body with wood instead of the actual plastic/alu/screws parts, too heavy…
That’s really tempting to get back to that project. The pics I’ve posted are a good motivation, and your post also, birnie!

We cant wait to see the finished room, the guitar collection hung up and the PS-10 when finished. Vic keeps all of his babies safely stored in their cases. I have mine hung up like in a music store. I haven't played in years unfortunately but when I open the door to my music room my heart patters and my mouth fills with Saliva LOL :-) Kind of like being in a strip club LOL :-)

Best wishes and we all look forward to seeing your updates when ready

Yes man, please continue!! We all live through your creations, it's great and we can't wait to see them finished and full realised.

Yes, my guitars spend non playing time in their cases. I pulled out my Gibson Flying V the other day for the first time in I don't know how long. I wanted to play it through my amp that I have now and show my son the guitar, being a KISS style guitar, as he's into KISS these days.

Thanks guys!
I really want to do something cool with that PS10, because that’s the first guitar that was totally mine.
Now I think I was searching for limits when I butchered it. I found them for sure since. Regrets. I guess I was a bit lost in 1992…
My guitars also sleep in their cases. There are so many I can’t play them that much, even though I play every day. I just keep two or three guitars in my living room, and rotate after a month. Now I’m busy with a Beck OW strat, my LP richlite Budokan, and a Gretsch 6128.
Thinking about opening the gold Jackson RR1 first five makes me salivate…

First Five Rhoads would be cool.

You can buy a passive EMG that looks like the active versions, so at least you can get the bridge and neck PAF P/U to work together!

I was only thinking about opening the Jackson case, not the guitar :D .My butchering experiences have taught me to forget about mods on a nice guitar. It’s some sort of a trauma…
But it’s true that an EMG neck PU is cool. So Vinnie-ish…

I still feel ashamed about having butchered that PS 10 and my US ‘88 strat. I think that was because I didn’t care about anything back then in 1993-4.
Now I'm just trying to save something from that stupid destruction, knowing it’ll be impossible to get everything as it was before…
Doing all this has also made me realize how difficult it is to be a luthier. Remember the great posts and pics Tom Palecki showed us? That was amazing!
