All of the Mill work and routing is done and I'm doing touch-up sanding at the moment.
Next is priming and touch up sanding. Also fill and sand on any small imperfections and
more primer. From there it's color application. Base coat white followed by sparkle (white)
pearl overcoat and inter-coat clear to protect the white pearl while I flake and coat the
shadow fins with the transparent gold overcoat. Last but not least, the final clear coats
followed by fine wet sanding, polishing and final assembly.

More Arjen Axe progress. Today I applied the first full coat of primer on the guitar.
and now I can see to take care of any little imperfections etc., followed by another
coat of primer before I lay down the white base coat. Is this getting exciting or what?
I really love this color coating time of the finishing process. The guitar looks really
white in this photo because it's a very light grey primer.

Question about grey versus white primer:

Does using a darker grey primer help fluorescent colors POP better compared to using white ?

Hey PB, it's the opposite. White is the ticket. I'm going to reveal something I just learned while
painting Wolfi's guitar and that is: I tried mixing some white into the pink neon as well as using the
base coat white and it worked a lot better. On the W/G I will be using a bit darker lacquer
primer after I get all of the surface defects taken care of.

The lighter colored base primer I used is a catalyzed material which works well to fill some minor
imperfections first. After that it's sanding and then some filling is done using an automotive repair
spot putty and then the lacquer primer followed by white base coats.

When I was painting the shells for my RC cars I learned about the different ways undercoat affected the colour.

Initially I was just using the one colour that the shell was going to be, then I learned it'a s good idea to back it with another colour and to use white to make a bright colour pop more, and obviously a black backing would darken it up. I usually used a white or a grey for this purpose.

RC shells are done in reverse order, which is why I stuck with one or two colours. So the paint doesn't come off when you crash, you pain the underside the main colour and then apply a white backing coat, or keep doing things if you've got more layers but it was too complicated for me and I just wanted it done and dusted, not spend days on a shell which eventually gets mangled.

Hmmmmm! Regarding the remark about looking "Super Sleek" I can visualize this guitar with a rocket engine
blasting it through outer space. Maybe I'll do a little Photo Shop work with it when it's done.

Getting close . . . . but I want to see flames shoot'n outa there. . . .
Still, very nice Dannii. Dig those metal shadow fins too.
Maybe next time I get to build a "92" I'll make up some polished Aluminum shadows.
I've got a long time friend in California with a CNC mill too.

Yeah! I like the green flames. Maybe too like blended bright white to yellow to orange . . . .
Or white into blue like a gas flame. How about rocket engine nozzle in the crotch too.
Although that might be a bit uncomfortable, ha, ha.

Progress on the White and Gold is here today. I've got it masked for the application of the Gold Flake on the shadow fins.
First I'm going to lay down a background color of fine sparkle gold then over coat that with the gold metal flake to make it really "pop".
Once that's done and allowed to dry a while I'll be removing the masking and applying the final two or three clear coats over the whole guitar.
From there it's fine sanding and on to polish. I'll also be taking some pics of it when I get the gold flake and clear coats on.

Hi GB,
Actually the white base coat with sparkle pearl overcoat are already there.
I only had to mask off the areas that are remaining white/pearl. Once I spray the
gold areas and remove the masking I'm ready for final clear coats.

OK, I'm getting there now . . . .
I'm going to shoot some clear on it today as soon as I finish my breakfast
(Mmmmmm! Oatmeal with honey and almond milk and cinnamon raisin toast.)

The masking will be gone as well in my next photo today.

Here's the axe with 3 coats of clear curing in da booth:
Tomorrow I'll wet sand again and add a couple more coats of clear.

And the close up of the Head Stock:

Interestingly enough the Vinnie signature is from a group of them that I used on
the original NAMM Show models in 2011. I was surprised that it lasted this long but a
quick shot from my heat gun helped it release from the plastic liner sheet.
( I'm waiting for some remarks on my last sentence.)
