Hey Kev,

Ha, You might be in the minority... Just kidding. Sure man thanks for watching it, I have so much fun doing these, it is like a new addiction. Regardless of how bad they might be. On the guitar, yes I love the pic guard! So glad that I decided to use that over the plain white one that came with the pickups. Have I seen pics of the Frankencaster ? I am assuming I have at somepoint ? You have so many great guitars Kev ! The scalloped neck on that one is cool, but very different feel for me. Honestly Kev, I am not totally used to it yet, I really haven't had enough time to just play it. Looking back, I should have gotten a neck that was just scalloped from the 12th up, instead of the entire neck. I don't really like it for rhythm playing too much. It's something different though.
On another note, the more I use that little Crate, the more I realize why I have had it for almost 20 years and hardly ever used it. I can't wait to get my gear room back up and running. :(

Yes, my Jems are scalloped 21-24 frets Fred! But I scalloped my 82' Ibi Destoyer the whole way! But my dream superstrat would look along the lines of this one!
Image

It can be easy to push a bit too hard when chording in the lower register and going a touch sharp. So 12-27(!) fret scallop is a great option.

I didn't realize you had more than 1 Jem Shram... share pics ? I agree, I would have gotten scallops above the 12th fret only, in hind sight.

Well Kev, looks like this section hasn't gotten the kind of participation that I was personally hoping for.
There have been a few video's posted, but most of them were just shares from youtube and not posted by the performers themselves. Oh well, looks like it's up to you and me to keep it alive. LOL

Here is a little solo adaptation for "That Time of Year" that I did tonight, Live from my new, rehabbed gear room. Finally playing thru a real amp ! The condenser mic on the laptop still isn't great, but it's a big improvement over the Crate.

Very cool Shreddy! :-)

As I mentioned before I like this better without the background music so I think that this is very cool brother. Your out there totally vulnerable with your vision and adaptation. I wonder too why our brothers here are not joining us because some of them are super good guitar players. Hell you and I don't care if someone could barely play "Mary had a Little Lamb" it is just fun to share and get to know each other better. I'll try to post something short this weekend to have your back!

Brothers this isn't a dick size contest because I wouldn't win that one either LOL - Jump in the waters fine !

Very nice Freddy. I only ever worked out a small portion of that, and other, solos from ASG. All the layers of guitars makes it hard to work out which line to play as one guitar.

Uncle Kev,

Eloquently spoken as always ! I know what you mean about no background music. My thought with these is to try and mix it up a little so that they are different each time, but just as hilarious.
I think playing with the tune sometimes is cool, because it gives a frame of reference. It's a little harder to get a good mix though, i.e my version of B.O.T.S. You get a good mix of you and the recording with the rhythm and then the solo comes and his volume is way up in the mix, I enjoy doing it either way. In some ways playing with the record is less forgiving, because if your outta tune or outta time or playing a wrong note or a different chord voicing then him, it sticks out like a sore thumb.... I would actually like to hear you do something with a little background music Kev. Give it a try ? Maybe a little "Ashes to Ashes" bridge/pre-solo section for the folks ? Whaddya say ? :D :D :D :D

Vic,

Yes I know what you mean... there's not much you can do about that when attempting to do something that was multitracked or "layered" as a single guitar. If something is harmonized electronically on record you can emulate that, and I think he used a harmonizer on parts of this solo, but otherwise all you can do is try an pick out the most prominent parts which is what I did here. I don't really use tabs for these and I wasn't wearing headphones as a guide or anything, just playing my adaptation of it as I recalled it in the moment.

Not sure, But I believe by the look on Vinnie's tired face in that interview from the studio, that he played EVERY harmony on that record.

The tab book shows three individual guitar lines on many of the melodic solos, like it was layered. I'm not sure myself if it was done via electronics.

Very possibly so Rick. It not like it hasn't been done... when my old band recorded we used live multi-track recording techniques or "overdubs" for accompanying parts and harmonies. Eventide Harmonizers were a staple of major album projects during that period and Eventide "signal processors" are listed on ASG as "equipment used in the making of this album". Most major studio's had them in their racks for use. I know I am not telling you anything that you don't already know, but as a discussion point, the benefit of using the gear for harmonies is that the volume mix of each harmony can be pre-set and performance ready, so that you can get the part in less time and take up less tracks on the tape, leaving more tracks available for track hogs, like drums and vocals. Also shortens mixing time. That being said, the artists/producer still might have opted for overdubbing the parts for any number of reasons. Take Mutt Lange for instance, who made Def Leppard apparently play entire pieces in single notes. Also keep in mind the differences in recording back then with reel to reel tape, as opposed to today's world of pro-tools and direct to digital recording, much different. This would be a great topic of conversation, if Vinnie would be willing to talk to us about it or anything at all, alas....it's not to be :( sorry for the long response post..

Yeah Vic, no real way to know for 100% sure, again unless the Vmeister wanted to talk about it.
The transcription or "tabs" still has to show the parts if they're there, regardless if they were produced by overdubbing or produced electronically. Frankly, I can't see what difference it makes... just saying. :D

In my desparate attempt to keep this thread alive.....Here is another one for ya ! As I do these, I am trying not to repeat things that have already been covered in this thread by posting members. I know there are vid shares from the kid on youtube doing a version of the song, so if he sees this
hopefully he knows this is not a response to his video. Just my own separate thing. :D

Nice work Freddy. I gotta get a webcam on my rehearsal PC and I think my power amp out there needs work as it was making a noise and then there was a smell last week. I gotta get it checked out. It's a Peavey 50/50.

Then I'll try and make some videos. G Rated this time! LOL.

Thanks Vic .... I hear ya.... I had some minor issues with my gear too after having it sit around for so long while redoing the room. All my guitars need some TLC as well.... it never ends ! :-)

Thanks Kev ! They're fun to do... I wish I had some better recording equitment....they get a tab bit better each time, but it's hard to drive the amp at all with the built in condenser mic..oh well. Lovin the profile pic Kev

Too much fun Frederick! I would like to add some stuff to this thread too but we just opened a new distribution center so with all the work I haven't been playing at all. You pretty much know all the chord progressions to Twisted. Keep these coming brother as I love these posts. Too bad that we live on opposite sides of the continent.

:-) Hey Bro, single schmucks like me can find a little more time for stuff like this... Highly doubt my X would have enjoyed this being done at the time I did it on Friday night ! ;-) I understand fully. As for the tune, and as I said in the youtube comments...the song is tuned down a 1/2 step on the record, I just transposed it instead of tuning down. If you are tuned down , just play the same chord patterns, down 1 fret. I agree on living so far, I have never been to Cali, but hope to get out there someday soon. I have 3-4 friends out there and would love to visit and see the sites.

Today's buzz provided by Dayquil :-) I somehow managed to catch a summer cold so to reduce the misery I was drinking Dayquil today. It was about 90 degrees with high humidity so this became a lounging Saturday where nothing productive was going to happen so this gave me something to do. Today's ax is another old Charvel played through a Peavey Triumph 60 Combo Amp that I keep in my office.

Uncle Kev !

What a cool surprise to log in and see all of your posts. Very cool !! Nice selection of songs too.
It really is interesting to watch and learn how you and others interpret the great songs that we all know and love.
I Love the Charvel, it must be a blast to own so many great guitars as you have in your collection. It was interesting to see you plucking the notes with your fingers of your right hand up on the neck while demonstrating "I Still Love You" ? Is there a particular reason why you chose that technique, instead of using the pick on the strings in the normal position ? Just curious. In truth I hesitate to ask, because I didn't want questions like that to come across as disrespectful in anyway. IMO as long as we are doing these it would be nice if we could discuss in detail without worry of ego's or feeling offended in any way. I certainly won't feel that way, if asked. Anyway my brother it's just a thought that I had and hope you know what I am trying to say. Great job ! Hope you feel better soon. :)

LOL with Fred :-)

Truthfully :-) Between the lack of practice and cold medicine that makes me drowzy I was having difficulty playing it. My main focus was to illustrate the positioning and the basic notes and I should have could have mentioned that. I do normally play that with a pick and I also wasn't mentally acute enough to talk about everything that I was trying to play which I may have done more in different circumstances. I still had a good time and if I hadn't focused on trying to do these I would have slept all day the way I felt. There is nothing good about sleeping all day unless there is a fine looking lady curled up next to you

Uncle Kev ! ...
... It was interesting to see you plucking the notes with your fingers of your right hand up on the neck while demonstrating "I Still Love You" ? Is there a particular reason why you chose that technique, instead of using the pick on the strings in the normal position ? ...
It took me to the 5:10 mark of this video :

Hey Bro,

I actually tried to do something yesterday afternoon/evening. I was having some freezing issues with the webcam that made it a little frustrating. I think somehow the file setting got switched to a different type which caused the vid/file to be too large. I couldn't get it uploaded to youtube or facebook. I also think my photobucket account was hacked... made some changes and seems to be okay now. I have a long physical week of work ahead so if I can, I'll follow your recent lead and do something Vinnie / KISS related. Looking forward to the Creatures demo. Have a great work week Kev and everyone have a good week. OUT !
