One of my favorite albums to put on and drive is the second Badlands, Voodoo Highway. I totally get why that album isn't popular but I thought it was a breath of fresh air in an overproduced hair metal universe. So raw, but still technical. It sounded like a real band playing live.

George would have been booted out of Ozzy real quick because Sharon would have been upset that he punched Ozzy's lights out every night!

At least Don D would have been sober enough to fight back! :)

It would've been right around that time! I could imagine Lynch in KISS musically. I can't hear Lee's sound in KISS. Especially the 80's.

I completely get why that record isn't well-known but I believed it was a breathing of clean air in an overproduced locks steel galaxy. So raw, but still specialized. It seemed like a actual group enjoying stay.

Me too. Love that album but I've heard lots of reviews saying it sounds poorly or under- produced. It always sounded like a real band playing together. The drumming is crazy cool.

If it hadn't been for Grunge, I think this album would've been one of the catalysts for metal to turn back away from being too glam and overly produced. (Not that I don't love some of those Glam overly-produced albums...there was just too many and everyone was sliding in that direction at one point.)

This album ishard rock. This is Humble Pie...and all those late 60's, early 70's rock bands that just tore it up. It was what was missing from metal at the time. There were no studio tricks to make a mediocre song more interesting to listen to.

Did you ever hear the Dusk "album"? For a collection of demos it's not bad. I've also read that they were absolutely unbelievable live, even at the end as they were breaking up. It's a shame because I think a band that powerful and genre defiant had so much more to give us.

All the Badlands Albums including Dusk are superb! You may want to pass on the Jake E Lee solo albums because like Nuno Bentencourt when he did a solo album he went in a drastically different direction musically

Re: Jake E. Lee is coming back

Post by erg2 »

I have most of the songs from Dusk. More in the same style as Voodoo Highway. A couple of the songs are really great, some of the songs feel like they were not really ready to be recorded.

It's hard to understand what happened to Badlands. The first album was expected to be huge, but sputtered. (I'm not a fan of the first one. I have it and listen to a couple of the songs, but there are a lot of songs that just don't "click".) The second album is, IMO, when the band found it's identity. Unfortunately the second album never got a chance to find an audience.

Apparently the band was hardly speaking during the "tour" for Voodoo Highway. Gillen was supposedly demoing his own songs at this time with plans of leaving the band and publicly bashing Jake. Jake retaliated by giving some kind of scathing interview on Gillen in Kerrang. (I'm trying to find it online.) Jake and the band were supposedly working with another singer and demoing. (John Bush maybe?) So the fact that the band with Gillen and Jake managed to put together DUSK at all seems like a miracle...and that's probably why some of the tracks feel like they weren't fully realized.

I have only heard of reported drug abuse about Jake. I never heard of him being a dick.
Ray Gillen is a different story. I have friends that he pulled the ROCK STAR trip on. He obviously was full of himself but OH WHAT A FUCKING VOICE. One of the best !!!!

I'd like to know more of the story of his time in Black Sabbath and why it went to shit so quickly.

the singer was John west that replaced ray they were dropped once ray was out because the record compnay lost there boy. ray was bac dooring the record company while in bad lands tryuing to change the bands sound to more commercial pop. Ray was quoted " jake e lee couldnt write a good/ hit song if his life depended on it" there falling out was ON STAGE at there very last show...

a fine pink mist is a fantastic record but it takes several passes to get it. jake has many infuences thus thats what make him so great his mind is wide open. it took me a few times but i tell ya he played some amazing stuff on that cd. im probablly the biggest jake e lee fan here. so i know im biased the retraced cd i felt he should have waited to do becuase he wasnt on top of his game totally. but i also know he dosnt care bout the business and is very jaded. and only does things when he feels like it. best of luck to one of my biggest influences cheers!

as for sabbath he was fired for singing on "strange wings" he had a contract and i guess sabbath didnt like it when he went off and did a track on a another cd funny paul o neil produced that savatage cd and the first badlands. ray was calling jake fr weeks and weeks after jake was out of ozzy. jake didnt answer the phone if i recall correctly it took ray gillens mother caling jake to get jake to actually call him back. jake just didnt wnat to play guitr at the time .he was working on his corvette that he had. just sick of the business and what happned.
