Carlos Cavazo Instruction Video
Here's a really cool instructional video by Carlos Cavazo from Quiet Riot. I love this guy I think he's really underrated.
Re: Carlos Cavazo Instruction Video
That intro solo was at the end of the Brian May Star Licks video.
One of many, there must have been about 10 previews bunched together
This was my favourite!
Watched it heaps of times, great little solo
I haven't watched the whole video yet though.....

It's too bad Carlos retired from the public eyebirnie wrote:That intro solo was at the end of the Brian May Star Licks video.

He was actually playing better than Warren DiMartini towards the end of his tenure in Ratt

Ok, there is a point once the skill set is high enough these debates become personal preference.
Warren I have always liked and is historically a great song writer. George Lynch feels that Warren borrowed greatly from his style and technique in the early 1980's and somewhere in the late 80's Warren transitioned and in my opinion borrowed greatly from the style of Joe Perry. You still see some shows but did you see the Infestation Tour? Warren's still got technique and performs at a very high skill set but he is pedestrian compared to his performances in the 1980's. His once great sound and tone has become thin and brittle sounding. In the early 1980's Ratt versus Quiet Riot I would argue with anybody that Warren smoked Carlos but during the Infestation Tour Carlos technique has grown greatly and Warren hasn't grown and in my opinion sonicly or tonally and has slipped a bit. Carlos has a wide and sweet hand vibrato on the Infestation Tour and phrases very well while playing very melodically. You play and I play a little here and there still but we both know there is jamming and what comes out spontaneously can be brilliant or something much less. Carlos fluid phrasing with that big wide hand vibrato sounds inspired to me and like he knows what he is playing and where he is going while Warren had become like he is travelling without a map.
This was never intended to be a Warren bashing statement rather a Carlos praising statement recognizing his growth over 20+ years. I'm a well recognized Ace Frehley Critique but I wouldn't say that Ace today plays pedestrian or low energy versus 1977 but Warren looks tame compared to his former self. That's OK as he is doing what he wants to be doing. I feel the same way about another respected and recognized guitar player Steve Howe. This guy hardly plays with any gain or distortion at all anymore and for me as good as he is technique wise is not exciting to watch anymore.
Here is a couple of examples that I will share to support my opinion recognizing that it is only my opinion:
6 minute mark of this video

This is no doubt Warrens band who plays the main solo and sounds like he is in limbo going no where. I love this song and Warrens Solo starts at 2:48 and Carlos outro starts at 3:46

Re: Carlos Cavazo Instruction Video
I like Carlos as a person . As a player, I prefer what he was doing on that instructional video. He played thematically.
To me, he became a noodle with a guitar sound that relied on the top end. You wouldn't dare walk in front of his cabinets during a show.
I strongly believe he lost a lot of the high end from his hearing. His personality doesn't fit his playing. He is one of the most laid back guys out there.
Warren, at his best and questionable worst , has some tasty note choices . He has learned to linger on those tasty notes. Plus, he has an arsenal of cool guitars.
I swing from that man's nuts.

I feel like instead of saying Carlos is better than Warren or vice versa but instead acknowledging that Carlos can't be Warren better than Warren can, and Warren can't be Carlos better than Carlos canposerboy71 wrote:I like Carlos as a person . There is not a BETTER or WORSE.
Slayer and I are simply pointing out the timeframe of when we enjoyed each individuals skills the most.
For me, Carlos sounded the best during the era of his instructional video. I believe that he lost a lot of his high-end hearing and his guitar tone suffered for it in later years. He also tried to play flashier and his THEMES suffered because of it. Sloppy and chromatic...
Warren was a tad bit flashier in his youth but hasn't lost his note choices that sting the listener into coming back for more .

It also depends upon style. Poserboy and I like much of the same music and guitar players but we also have some healthy different opinions. We like to debate these differences once in a while in a very respectful manner. I may be tone deaf so I can't address Rick's Theory on Carlos High End Hearing Loss but me what I like about Carlos recent playing is some of what Rick doesn't like. Carlos on the Infestation Tour played with more fire and aggression. For me he played faster and with more energy which I enjoyed and sounds like Rick enjoyed this less. This style that attracts me is also one of the reasons that I like Vincent Cusano's Guitar Playing so much. Vinnie could flat out play fast with ferocious intensity while still showing extremely high technique. When guys are this good it is really all about personal preference. When Rick and I have these debates sometimes we look at something from a different vantage and learn from each other. Friendly debate is good and is how we learn to improve ourselves as a species and society. If it were not for debate and sharing of opinions we might still believe that the Earth was flat? Great discussion gentlemen!

Re: Carlos Cavazo Instruction Video
SOTA, I worked for Carlos 15 years ago on a Poison tour. He was the nicest guy in the band. His sound was shrill and very loud. He wasn't playing thematically like he used to . He had a very European approach to his playing early on then gravitated to the California gunslinger approach that, I feel, doesn't suit him.
I will , however, start watching some live Ratt shows from a few years back and take heed to what Uncle Kev has pointed out.
Like Kev said, a debate is healthy . We carefully and respectfully explain our points and encourage each other to investigate.
