ALL FOR THE LOVE OF ROCK N ROLL RIPPED OFF?!

Post by PinkWiz »

The Tuff Darts originally recorded this back in '76... it's pretty much the same exact song as the Kiss-Monster song but Paul takes full writing credit for it... WTF? :?:

I'm guessing Paul paid the members of Tuff Darts off to use this, change up the lyrics and take full writing credit? Kinda like Gene with BTO and Rock and Roll Hell but much worse!

I can see where Paul may have BORROWED some lyrical ideas but the song is basic Classic Rock fodder and the hooks and Choruses are different enough to not warrant a lawsuit...

That being said, It is one of my favorite tunes on the new Kiss album.

I'm just thinking the songwriter of the Tuff Darts version should've been credited.. clearly Paul knew of this tune. It's too similar...

I never heard of the tuff darts ever before this. I think the notion that a band does research on or knows every possible song that resembles one they write is a stretch. And to pay some one to due an exhaustive search is more than likely to costly. It may very well be they found it and tossed them a bit of cash for a song that never did anything.

That was my point. Paul has probably always liked the tune (or found it) and since it was never a hit paid the original songwriter to use it and take full writing credit. But the two songs are definitely no coincidence (the irony being how Paul likes to make it clear that no outside writers were used.)

This quote helps me see what you were getting at.

Check out "Danger Us" off of Sonic Boom, then listen to this:

There are SO many songs in the universe that I doubt a song CAN be written without it sounding SOMETHING like a little like a song that already exists. I think you guys might be chasing ghosts here.

I get what you're sayin erg but those two tunes are too similar to be coincidence... the phrasing, the lyrics, titles, etc.

Look, I know everyone borrows sometimes but it's so ironic in this case with Paul overstating how both Sonic Boom and Monster "had no outside writers." Bullshit.

Actually PW, not to get in a pissing war Paul clearly stated the whole album was a tip of the hat to the bands who inspired them. With that said, I hear a lot of stuff including Rolling Stones, Queen, Fog Hat and the obvious hooks stated here. Good post though !

Yes I've read some of the interviews where Paul talked about the bands who've inspired him... I guess we can add the Tuff Darts and Wrathchild America to that list...

I think the fact of the matter is everything has been done really. When Bob Coburn ( of Rockline ) asked Paul what he thought of Springsteen's outlaw pete, Paul calmly said it was a coincidence and didn't think it was intentional. There are only so many chords and notes.

I actually like the Tuff Dart's original better... kinda "punky". Paul spreads on the cheese a little too thick nowadays with his lyrics.

for the most part his lyrics were always cheesy... but as someone here once described, his lyrics are a bit too "Tony Robbins" today.

That was me! Sometime in the mid-80's it seemed like 75% of the songs Paul wrote had to be some kind of positive, life affirming message. Yes you can. You can do it. Be whatever you want to be. Nothing can stop you. Reach for the stars. Not that those kinds of messages are bad things, but that's not necessarily what I listen to KISS for.
