Best: Heaven's On Fire (Animalize)
For me, this song represents the best kind of stripped down, pure sound, Keep It Simple Stupid but nicely composed at the same time kind of sound KISS should have had. I could've also picked the stylistically similar LICK IT UP, but I honestly think HOF is a better written song. This should've been a blueprint for Asylum, but they got full of themselves.

Worst: Burn Bitch Burn (Animalize)
On the same album, terrible lyrics, awful vocal, hodgepodge composition. This and Asylum represent some of the worst Gene songs.

I've already explained this but it's the strongest KISS power ballad ever, killer songwriting by Paul and Vinnie, killer solo, killer production... goosebump factor 1000 %! Perfect tune.


WORST: CADILLAC DREAMS (Hot In The Shade):
Ugh, what the f**k was Gene thinking? Just listen, you'll know what I mean. Actually, don't listen, you'll regret it. Bruce hates this tune too...

RE : no no no. i think it was the hype around it just before the release. I thought it would be the best kiss tune ever from what gene said.
I got to say a lot of the Gene tunes from the non make up era I don't remember enough to say they were the worst.
He has one or two bad ones on Animalize if I remember.

The worst all time song Kiss made for me is that ballad Peter sang in the reunion album.

I Finally Found My Way...is just gosh awful. It's formulaic, uninspired and boring.
The Psycho Circus album in general always gets me upset. To hear Gene & Paul blowing about how the "best songs" were chosen, and then to hear the songs on the album...I'd hate to hear the ideas that DIDN'T make it!!!

If it involves worst KISS song ever (makeup or none) then yes... I Finally Found My Way... what a shitty thrown together Stanley/Ezrin penned piece of crap. Not to mention Peter's shitty vocals... so outta key. All of Paul's ballads from 1989 onward suck too imo... especially that one on COS... I Will Be There. I know it's about his son or whatever but damn that song and the vocal on it... ugh.

This is off the topic a bit cause I can't make up my mind which non make up KISS is Best or worst, but I do know one thing. In the same breath 'X in Sex' was lame & 'Rock Hard' was awesome. Hate that Syth bass line & pretend Horns section in 'X in Sex'. Good tile for a song, the clip is cool & Bruce's Purple Esp is killer. That's about it.
And pretty much for me, every Gene song expect the ones Vinnie wrote were crapola. I can listen to Animalize, Crazy Nights & Asylum in about 20mins per CD.

I almost like I WILL BE THERE. It's decent but goes on a little too long and the shrieking vocals at the end do not suit the song and are grating.

X in Sex and Rock Hard are both decent songs that needed a little more work and real production with 2guitars, 1bass and drums...no synths. I don't think they'd be the greatest KISS songs ever, but they'd be more listenable now and could fit into any of their tour set-lists.

Interesting , I have never heard anyone say 8th day before.. isn't that the solo gene merged many different vv solos together? I remember vinnie saying that tune really got hacked at and messed up. Not sure how vv still feels.
