You could tell Paul wanted to join in on the fun and Gene was the "prick businessman" trying to show parents (and his mom)that they weren't dangerous, druggie, rockers that people thought they were.

1) One of the most hysterical interviews I've ever seen
2) It's a shame that they only show a portion of it on Kissology
3) Kissology had the opportunity to be a true historical record of the band, but Gene/Paul screwed them up. Left SO much out. Got things out of order. What a shame.
I own them all and think they are nice, but they could have been a rabid fan's dream!!

I was surprised Gene agreed to include this on kissology... He doesn't come across too well, Ace steals the spotlight & Genes looks Like a kid at Christmas that got nothing but clothes instead of toys for gifts...

He's smart enough to know that it's great entertainment though

I hated that they only put part of their first concert on the first set which I assumed was because they only had part of it, but then they put the entire thing on the last set.
The sets almost completely ignore the 80s non-make up era.
You KNOW they have more Mark St John material!!!

Yeah...but it would have been nice to have it be chronological/historical. It felt like that was the original intent. Don't get me wrong, I love having all of that footage and will continue to get new Kissoligies as they are released.

If kissology 4 covers 2001-2010 I don't think they'll sell as many units as they did for volumes 1,2 or 3... The last 10 years of kiss just isnt as interesting unfortunately...

There, Gene actually admits that Ace is the star of this interview and compares himself as a grimly old man who's just sitting there to ruin all the fun for the rest of the guys.

Ace & Gene got together for lunch the other day... Nice to see they are friendly again... Kiss almost drove Ace nuts & back to alcoholism... He seems real happy now which is great!

I've never played the audio commentary but that is cool of Gene to admit that but I would have been the same in his shoes at the time.

Ace is unable to deal with being in a top level, professional band. Love his work but he's too afraid of working hard, which for a muso at his level is good, easy work.

He did well to maintain a top level career with a huge band like kiss in the 70's.. Let's just say he made a better go at it than Peter did.. It's funny to think there are still many die hard fans that only like kiss '73-'80 (original line up) and it was such a small window in their 38 year career... They did so much after Pete left...

Ace should've been HUGE in the 80s as a solo artist, but he signed with the wrong label for his band AND let his alcoholism get the best of him.

Not to mention his departure from the band (having no real control over their music anymore (since Gene & Paul always over-voted him now that Pete left and Eric didn't count) and most of his work being outright cut from "The Elder", which was a flop too) at least makes some sense. Even a top level and hardworking musician would doubt himself in that sort of situation.

Yeah I think the Elder was the final straw for Ace... He disliked the direction that Gene & Paul were taking the band (as did Eric) so Ace recorded his parts at his home studio... Most of his guitarwork got cut from the final album...

Let's also not forget that Ace was really getting into drugs HEAVILY at this point and maybe...just maybe...his guitar parts weren't very good. Either way, I enjoy the Elder but it was definitely the wrong way for KISS to go at the time.
I've always thought KISS could do a concept album. Think about it; Detroit Rock City is a "concept" song that tells a story, "She" is a concept song that tells a story, "Hotter Than Hell" is a concept song that tells a story, etc, etc, etc...

They need to stick to 3 things:
1= stick to the topics that got you there, sex and partying. (Not mystic creatures and little boys)
2= stick to the KISS sound. (Not over-produced, over-thought out metal)
3= stick to telling an entire story...not the first 1/3! (I was never able to figure out the point of the story for years until I found out it was the first part of a trilogy...)

I acquired a vinyl copy of The Elder where the order is correct many years later, but I originally listened to the cassette where the order was switched!! Certainly that did not help the already shaky story to make sense.

What I want is a "special edition" of The Elder with the songs in order, the spoken word sections restored, and inserting any songs that were 'cut'.

Answer = yes many times. My request was for a competent or even great solo which Paul Frehley isn't capable of. Notice that I have trouble calling Ace - Ace. LOL. From what I've read whatever short forgetable solo that was present on the studio version of "The Oath" was played by Stanley Eisen anyway.

To me this is a great song except for the lack of a real memorable guitar solo

I like the Friday's live version of this song and the 2 others that were performed but Frehley sounds terrible.
