Listen to crowd begging for a chance to actually hear him play in 1994 and he gave them NOTHING! I've seen a bunch of these recordings and I have never seen a single example where he joined a tribute band on stage and was ever playing at a volume where you could actually hear him playing. I'm not even sure that he was even connected to an amplifier. His fingers are clearly in the correct neck positions playing these songs but you can't hear him playing. This was a relatively good tribute band but the truth is that he could smoke them at any moment and he never once fills or plays a trailing outro to any song with a tribute band. I think at all of these events he is doing nothing more that standing on stage posing with these guys playing a guitar that is not even connected to an amplifier. The crowd begs him to play something / anything and he declines.

I don't understand this apparent fact

That's pretty much all he ever did. Considering this is the guy that would normally play EVERYWHERE in a song and now back then on the Expo circuit he was faking playing rhythm only. It defies logic.

This magnifies the fact that nobody has seen Vinnie actually play like he used to since the 80's. Quite a long time ago.

This is a great post! Many people back in the day hated him because they thought that he blatantly overplayed and shit on the songs but this is certainly one of the things that attracted me to him

There is no question that he was an amazing songwriter and player that could play tastefully but he was famous for his over playing

Vic, This footage isn't Hotter Than Hell. The footage of Vinnie talking has the HTH stage behind him.

I was in HTH 2 years after that convention. I'll contact Scott( Ace) and see if he has any Vinnie stories.

why does he not play a solo? . this is what the fans want but vv doesn't want to do it?? its so strange. obviously vv has something in his head.. maybe he thinks it will be recorded and sold or he wants a lot more money to play through an amp. Who promoted this expo in Buffalo? he maybe interesting to speak with.

I think he's amped up for Lick It Up, as the Paul Stanley doesn't play. Interesting to see him playing a Carvin.

From memory I believe it was borrowed. The guy who loaned it to him was on the old pyro board. Vv said to him he loved carvins and the neck felt the same as his vv model carvin.

It's a riddle why he didnt play. I still don't understand why he dorsnt put out music.. I guess that with all his ...creditors he must think he is going to have to pay any royalties to people he owes such as courts and lawyers. Just guess.. can not think of anything else other than depression.

Ace wanted out of KISS at that time so I can't really see him wanting back in so soon... that was probably just a scare tactic toward Vinnie from Gene hoping it would shape him up and quit being so difficult.

It would've been cool though to see the Space Ace and Wiz onstage together if Gene's plan worked out of having Ace tour Creatures with Vinnie on guitar too.

I see we have a vinnie zombie on the yout comments section already. "Maybe vinnie was right about the hate.."
Someone also accused me of lying about what was said in the video. All because I posted a comment about taking preorders for material that didnt come.

Hello,
I might be able to help with some questions about this...
My name is Mike and I was the Bass player for ROCK AND ROLL OVER.

The band in question is indeed ROCK AND ROLL OVER.
As far as I know, we were the only KISS Tribute Band in the United States that ever played with Vinnie at any conventions or Expos.
We were lucky enough to have played with him twice.
Once in Buffalo, NY and then again in Seekonk, MA.

The Carvin guitar belonged to our lead guitarist.
It was a backup guitar and since Vinnie didn't bring one, we let him use that one.
The guitar has since been sold BUT it was autographed by Vinnie and is out there someplace.
As a matter of fact, I think that Peter Criss signed it as well but I'd have to double check that.

WHY DIDN'T VINNIE PLAY THE SOLOS?

We were told that we were going to play with Vinnie and that we should make sure that we knew "Cold Gin" and "Lick It Up".
Well, "Cold Gin" was already a part of our set-list and it didn't take us more than an hour to learn "Lick It Up".
We had just assumed (since we were told what songs we were going to play) that Vinnie would play the guitar solos in these songs.
I mean, the guy is a guitar GREAT so why would we assume anything else?

Well, we drove 9 hours to Buffalo on the Big Day.
We talked to Vinnie really quick before the show and he told us that our Guitarist would be playing the solos.
He said that this was our gig and it was about us...
I don't think that he truly understood that the fans wanted to hear him.

The SAD part of the whole thing is that there were actually people that accused us of having such big egos that WE WOULDN'T LET VINNIE PLAY THE SOLO!
Absurd, that has got to be one of the stupidest things that we had ever heard.
We wanted him to play the solos BUT we weren't about to argue with him over it, make him mad at us and ruin our chances of playing with him.

As I said, "Cold Gin" was already in our set-list so that wasn't a problem but when we got to "Lick It Up" our Guitarist had to improvise a solo on the spot.

Vinnie did play Rhythm Guitar in both songs.
The guy who played Paul Stanley wasn't plugged in for those songs.

It was a GREAT experience and I'll always be grateful to Vinnie for allowing me to make a dream come true.
(Playing with a member of KISS)
But I just wish that he would have played the solos.
Here we are, about 28 years later and fans are still wondering WHY he didn't play the solos, LOL.

Anyway, I hope I was able to answer your questions.

Mike

Thanks for that. I think the lead guitarist in your band was on one of the older vv forums.
He never played lead with any tribute band.. pretty crazy.
Thanks again, great story.

Did vinnie and peter hang together in buffalo ?

The wig looks great in the footage!!! Lol.

Thanks for giving us some insight into what was up with Vinnie at the conventions. For some reason he never, ever took a solo, so he has not played a solo live since the 80s.

I wouldn't have argued either but I'm with you in wishing he would have done it.

Cold Gin is a strange choice for Vinnie to want to play with you guys.

Last live solo was in august 1988 . 24 years. Funny he said in 1994 that it was 12 years since he wrote I still love you and was acting like his memory was a little rough due to time. Well it now a further 18 years from buffalo and 30 years since creatures.

No, we met Peter in Providence, RI.
My lead guitarist's name is Adam.
I don't think that he was ever on any other VV board, it was hard enough to get him to join Facebook.
:D

Yes, I mistakenly said it was 28 years since the convention.
I should have hit the "1" but hit the "2" by accident.

Funny you should ask.
When we were talking to him about who was going to play the solos, he was brushing the wig while it was on his head.
It looked fine.

I thought that Cold Gin was a strange choice too but, it worked out okay.
Unfortunately, I can only find 2 photos of us with Vinnie.
I'm also posting pics from when we played the Official KISS Konvention in Boston, MA. with Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley, in case anyone is interested.

He didn't request to play, he was asked to play by the promoter of the convention.
Why he didn't bring his own guitar is beyond me.
Also, I honestly don't know who it was that actually picked the songs.
Meaning, it could have been Vinnie or it could have been the Promoter.
All I know is what I was told to do (over the phone) and we did it.

Thank You.
It's funny how sometimes, that part of my life seems like just yesterday.
We're all still friends but we don't get to see each other very often.
I'd LOVE to play with the guys again but without the makeup and costumes.
Being that I'm now 44 years old, It might not be as fun as it once was.
