What do famous guitar players think about Vinnie and his style?

Post by tukoztukoz »

I know MABatio had great respect for Vinnie. John 5 went to see Tom's place at NAMM. Mark Slaughter showed respect too, but he's no great player, judging by one of his tuturial video I saw on youtube...
There's not a lot to read about Vinnie from famous guitar players.
It would be great to hear people like, let's say, Steve Vai, Malmsteen, Hammett, Satriani and all the surviving eighties generation of shredders for a talk about Vinnie. Of course they would have to listen to a good selection of solos first...

Yeah, I have no idea what these guys think of Vinnie.

I know the Iron Maiden guys heard Vinnie playing while VVI toured with them, before the show, and were amazed at the things he could do that were not in the VVI style. They know that he's a monster of a player that could do just about anything, though chose to do the shred thing as his public side.

By reading the comments on REH video that you posted on youtube, you can see lots of hateful comments, saying "this is not music" "it's a bunch of angry bees" "my 12 years old son can do the same thing", etc.
People expect things from Vinnie that he didn't want to be or do. Maybe the famous players fear to talk nice about Vinnie's music because lots of guitar interested people don't appreciate Vinnie, according to those negative comments?

You do get a lot of negative comments at guitar sites and from general guitarists out there, who just don't get it.

I'm not sure why they don't hear what we do, I mean, Vinnie's music is not boring, it's full of "passion and fire", they should be joining us. Instead they deride his playing while they listen to some boring player that they think is better.

I remember Paul Gilbert mentioning Vinnie in a somewhat recent interview. The Swedish interviewer Paul spoke of asked him why he didn't have a recognizable style like Winnie Wincent, Malmsteen, etc...

Lets just say: you need a really "open" ear to get Vinnie´s playing and concepts..I like to think I do..hehe..
But for the casual listener, it is pretty "out there" at times... Its a free world, one can play any way one wishes, right.

In 80s I read interviews with John norm and vinnie Moore talking vv. I have to say that I don't think it was cool to say you loved vv's playing at the time. Lynch, vai malmsteen was fine. I think in general it was down to the vv glam look that made it hard.
I think most guitar players love and respect his work, but they just won't say it publicly

When he's doing those crazy solos in the REH video, the one half-way through and the one at the end....
Absolutley blazingly fast, he's not restircted by any scale/apregio, he can do basically anything !
..that being said, there's zero rhythm or over-riding melody/tune.
It really is hard to listen to the whole thing.
....and that also being said, I don't think that's what he's trying to achieve.
He is trying to showoff and so he damn well should.
He does it well and with total skill.
Sometimes I forget how good he is and go back maybe 6months or a year later, watch those bits and my jaw drops.

But peeps are probably comparing to the Paul Gilberts etc....
His (Pauls) intro solo on the 1st instruction vid he did (i think it's his 1st) has it all, except vinnies 'freedom' on the fret board.
He does a well thought out constructed solo with piles of tricks/scales arpegios but it is tuneful and you can follow it like a song.
The general public relate to this better but a lot of planning would have gone into that solo.
None would have gone into Vinnies

There's a definate differrence, it just depends whether you can see/appreciate the diffence.
Luckily for us, we can :)

I always laugh at people who say,"Vinnie just plays random shit"....then you watch the REH vid and for every lick Vinnie plays it fast, then slow, then fast again AND EXACTLY THE SAME each time! That ain't "random shit"!

He is very precise and clean when he plays. He has amazing feel, attack and a great sense of melody. His is extremely technical in his playing. His whammy techniques, chicken picking and phrasing are absolutely incredible. I can remember being angered in the past by ignorant people making statements made about his playing style. Now it is laughable. His style may not be everyone's cup of tea, but there is no denying that the man is a truly gifted and very talented individual.
