As we were talking about chicken picking in another topic, a question came to me, about the following exercise :

What note did Vinnie strike with his middle finger? When does he generally play "chicken note"? Right before the beat? On the beat?

The D on the G string I presume? Haven't watched the video for a while though!

Think he just uses it when string skipping rather than for on/off beat effect....though no doubt he did that too!

And stuff like the Bolero lick where he chicken picks rather than sweeping it.

Ankh posted an interesting link about Vinnie's style this year : http://www.guitar-muse.com/guitar-notes ... ncent-5165

I quote this from Scott Collins, the author of the article :

"The key thing with Vinnie’s playing is to attack the notes almost to the point of abandon!"

Is it because the "chicken picked note" is played louder, just before the beat (first and ninth notes on the exercise mentioned above) ?

It would be interesting to know who did the transcription job for that video, and how it was done.

I'm looking for a booklet that came with the video. Any idea where I can find one (PDF, ...)?

Yes, there is no booklet with my copy, which I bought new, so it would be there if it was.

there are many programs, especially with mozilla, that make possible to select an area of any page/vid you are watching and save a snapshot

Ok, I've just checked on different sites, there's no booklet for the Vinnie video, but there's usually one for the other REH tapes...
Pencil and paper, snapshot saves, yes, that's the thing to do :| .

An interesting thing to try is to transfer the soundtrack to an IPod, and then listen to it without the image. I've done that a few times in my car recently, and I feel like being more receptive to what he plays and says...

The first solo seems like an addition/presentation of all the techniques he shows during the video. There's a sort of a well-thought construction. Great video! I'll listen to it next week, maybe, let's say, 10 times...

Beginning to understand some of Vinnie's playing... I still have to work on some movements. This REH video is full of interesting stuff!

Thanks, I'll go with the Ultra(tra)sh VVV next time, and a delay too - here there was a Marshall only. I still have to learn to pick more softly on this lick, and it'll be better . What I like in it is there are no hammer-ons, no pull-offs, and no sweeping : each note is struck either by the pick or by one of the two fingers.

Sounds like trash.....Ultratrash !
That's the first real expo of that mean piece isn't it ?
Sounds good :D

I learnt a couple, pretty sloppy though.
There's 2 licks he does seperate then later on, ties them together.
I'm no where near the required capabilities though but still have a red hot go ;)

I've just taken the 46.30 REH lick to put it on a weird rythm. The goal was not speed, but rythm. Not so easy...
Comments on YouTube often say Vinnie has no sense of melody, which I strongly disagree. I love the melody he puts into that lick. But it's true his speed hides the melody, which is kind of funny...
